Bajaj is perhaps one of the biggest challengers to apathy. The group is the finest example of the ‘been there done that’ proverb. They suffered plant shutdowns, family splits & also the unfortunate break up of the partnership with the Firodias. The company under Rahul Bajaj suff ered from the typical complacency of the Licence Raj period. Rahul Bajaj was in fact the head of the now infamous Bombay Club, which protested vehemently against liberalisation. After 1991, the group suffered greatly due to competition and the consistent decline in scooter sales.
Slowly, the Bajaj Group restructured itself. The first wave saw the tie up with Japanese partner Kawasaki to manufacture and market bikes like KB-RTZ and the 4S Champion. The advent of Rahul’s sons Sanjiv and Rajiv Bajaj at the helm of affairs saw the company further moving away from scooters and coming up with the indigenously designed Pulsar in the premium segment, the most successful product from the Bajaj stable after the Chetak.

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE
I really liked your B&E Corporation story on Intel Corp. titled ‘Intel Outside’. Firstly, I loved the heading itself as it clearly showed how Intel is only focusing on what lies without than what should actually be their key focus, i.e. within. Secondly, they should seriously think about manufacturing in a land with cheap labour and cheaper total costs such as India. With the western economies outsourcing their customer service jobs to the low-cost Asian nations, the company should seriously delve over whether they only intend to promise themselves with no concrete plans to do what really is necessary. The motives of this giant really seem myopic and the danger signals seems pretty clear with falling segmentwise revenues which has only headed southwards over last year. Undoubtedly, for Intel to rise again and reign supreme it is imperative for them to formalize the right strategies for all high-growth markets – especially India – otherwise its shrewd competitors like AMD, etc. will only be too happy to take advantage of the sleeping giant and erode its market share away! Once again, a brilliant report with an equally brilliant execution that is among the best so far. A truly brave effort that uncovers the most grave situation for the global major.

Mercedes targets sub-25 lakh segment
DaimlerChrysler
is very bullish on the Indian auto market. The company launched the new, upgraded E-Class luxury saloons on November 6 this year. DaimlerChrysler is all set for another manufacturing facility in Pune, where the company will invest an estimated $56 million. Earlier this year, the US-German auto conglomerate also launched its Actros range of trucks, which will compete with Volvo & Tata in 35+ tonne category. A market feasibility study is reportedly being conducted by the company to access the need for an entry luxury (sub-Rs.2.5 million) product. According to market sources, DaimlerChrysler could look into some other brands like Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, to cater to the demands of a growing population of affluent Indian professionals.
