IIPM PUBLICATION
BRAND: Sony Ericsson
AGENCY: Saatchi & Saatchi
BASELINE: I love the thump
DESCRIPTION: The delectable Hrithik Roshan
grabs his Sony Ericsson W200i, and says: ‘The funk is here.’ Switching the device on, he gets high on the music and begins to dance. Next, two boys are shown dancing atop buses; a man dances inside his office, while two girls go wild with the music at a roadside cafe. A girl in a desi outfit too starts dancing on a busy street. Finally, a troupe led by Hrithik is shown dancing wildly, as non-stop music plays on, on their handsets. Hrithik takes a call on his handset and says that he is making the world dance. He signs off saying ‘the thump is here.’
4Ps TAKE: The perspiration signs are beginning to show even as the mobile handset war hots up. In a market dominated between Motorola and Nokia, the power idea is to grab a piece of the pie for Sony Ericsson. And what better way than to take the starry route? Hrithik Roshan takes on Motorola’s Abhishek Bachchan – make no mistake about that! The USP of the product: the music you can download and listen to. The music is called ‘thump’, thanks to the woofer effect feature that the phone comes loaded with; the communication is bang on with the tagline, “I love the thump”. The visual is pure eye-candy (at least for Hrithik fans!) and need we mention the reward to the prospect? But, of course, Hrithik! If he’s flaunting it, so should you! It’s your turn now to jump with the Sony-Ericsson W200i’s musical thump!

Dwelling in the creases and crevices of perhaps the greenest spread on earth, better known as Sabi Sands, there’re chances rare that you’ll NOT come across lions, leopards, rhinos, buff aloes and elephants – collectively called the Big 5 – all at once, any time during the day! Nestled in the Kruger National Park area, Sabi Sands perhaps makes for the best tourist destination in South Africa, and is renowned for its ‘wild’ natural settings supported by the most developed infrastructure. It’s sure to leave you with the greenest memories of your life!

And what’s to gain? Well, we have MedImmune’s widely-selling drugs – Synagis (anti-viral) and FluMist (flu vaccine) added to its kitty along with 45 new biotech drugs presently under test. Besides the biotech sector looks in for pleasant tidings, according to a report by Ernst & Young in March 2006, which states that the number of public biotech firms has risen by 5% yoy to 710 and revenues have grown by 14% to $73.48 billion. However, shareholders feel the deal is more of a last resort. Louis Schweitzer, Chairman, AstraZeneca responds, “This is clearly not an act of desperation. The acquisition was considered months ahead of the final decision…” But consider that AstraZeneca plans to cut costs by shedding about 3,000 jobs by 2009 and faces patent expiries on big sellers like Crestor & Seroquel, and it seems that the firm has stretched its resources too far.
The focus should instead be more towards R&D. According to MIT, the global spend by pharma companies was $40 billion in 2005 (a growth of 135% over 1996), but the number of FDA approvals in 2005 were just 20 (down from 53 in 2006). This shows how R&D spending is getting extremely crucial. So while Astra- Zeneca proceeds to spend billions integrating MedImmune with itself, it just may have missed out the bigger picture; while Icahn of course pockets a cool $187 million!
